Calabash is ideal for a single person, couple or a couple with young child. There is a day bed/single bed in in addition to the Queen bed, and a baby cot can also be placed in the room. Our guests love the covered wooden deck with the open air kitchenette, a great place to cook, eat, relax or work. Although surrounded by nature, the bedroom and ensuite bathroom (no door between bedroom and bathroom) are more enclosed and built with concrete, which keeps the interior cool and protected from the elements.
The Calabash cottage is located near the Almond Cottage and the Balenbouche Plantation house – it is a little less secluded than some of our other accommodations, but still quite private. If you are looking for an authentic, cozy and inexpensive accommodation in a beautiful natural surroundings, our Calabash Cottage might just be the perfect place to settle in!
Please note that all our historic and newer accommodations are built in an eco-friendly, open and tropical style, with no window screens or air conditioning, only standing fans and mosquito nets. Balenbouche is best for adventurous travelers who are comfortable with the outdoors, do not require resort style amenities and are looking to experience true island life.

The story of Calabash
Calabash began as a store room for horseback riding equipment, behind the rainwater cistern which supplied the main house until 1998. Most of the structure was later replaced with a room for volunteers, with concrete blocks. About a decade later, the covered wooden deck was added, and the cottage was renamed “Calabash” after the Calabash tree and lush vegetation it overlooks. In 2021, we added a kitchenette with a beautiful tropical hardwood countertop to the deck, making the Calabash a fully self sufficient cabin.
